SR&ED can reduce the cost of eligible scientific research and experimental development in Canada. Developing software, improving a product or running a prototype does not automatically make the work eligible.

Eligibility comes before the credit calculation

The work must meet the program's requirements, including scientific or technological advancement sought through a systematic investigation or search. Keep records of the uncertainty, hypotheses, experiments, observations and conclusions. Routine engineering, routine testing and ordinary product development need to be distinguished from qualifying work.

Which credit rate applies?

The basic federal investment tax credit rate is 15%. Some corporations can earn an enhanced 35% rate, subject to the applicable expenditure limit and other conditions. The current rules also extend the enhanced rate to eligible Canadian public corporations for tax years beginning after December 15, 2024. Refundability is a separate question; not every claimant or expenditure produces a 35% cash refund.

Use the current rules for the relevant tax year and expenditure type. Provincial incentives, assistance received and associated-company limits can affect the result. Do not budget a refund solely from a headline rate.

Prepare the claim while the work is underway

Maintain dated technical records and link each project to payroll, contractor invoices, materials and other claimed costs. Track government assistance and avoid claiming the same cost twice. Confirm the reporting deadline and required forms before filing.

Choose an adviser who tests the evidence

A useful adviser will explain why the work qualifies, identify weak documentation, support the expenditure calculation and describe what happens if CRA reviews the claim. Ask who prepares the technical narrative, who checks the financial calculation and what review assistance the engagement includes.

A consultant can help prepare a claim; no adviser can guarantee CRA acceptance. Start with an eligibility assessment and a clear scope.
